Section 4 : Explanation-based and relevance-based learning

Commentary

Section Goals

  • To introduce two knowledge-related learning methods: explanation-based learning and relevance-based learning.

Learning Objectives

Learning Objective 1

  • Describe the ideas behind an analytic learning method, and discriminate it from inductive learning methods.
  • Explain how to extract general rules (learning) from examples based on knowledge representation and hypothesis search.
  • Explain how to use relevant information for learning (relevance-based learning).

Objective Readings

Required readings:

Reading topics:

Explanation- and Relevance-based Learning (see Sections 19.3 - 19.4 of AIMA3ed)

Kambhampati, S. (1998). On the relations between intelligent backtracking and failure-driven explanation-based learning in constraint satisfaction and planning. Artificial Intelligence, 105(1-2), 161-208.

Objective Questions

  • Why and how can general rules be extracted by explanation-based learning?

Objective Activities

  • Explore the potential and the challenges of wide and/or large scale applications of EBL.
